Control Helix Parameters Via MIDI Footpedal in Studio One
Studio One has several ways to handle automation, but let’s cover a really simple one: controlling a wah pedal position with a physical pedal (or other physical controller, like a mod wheel) that outputs MIDI.
Suppose you have a MIDI footpedal that outputs MIDI controller #1. Here’s the step-by-step process for using it to control a parameters in Helix Native.
1. Add an Instrument track to Studio One and assign its output to Helix Native. Assign the Instrument Track's input to the relevant MIDI controller (or just choose "All Inputs" to make life easier).
2. Right-click on the Helix Wah position parameter, and choose Controller Assign > MIDI Learn.
3. Move the footpedal to complete the assignment (but see the important note below). The Position slider will move based on the pedal position.
4. Put the Instrument track in record mode, start recording, and move the pedal to record the automation.
Important: Note that MIDI controller #1 is reserved for Helix hardware, so if you want to use this controller, Helix won’t recognize it. So, you need to go into Preferences and turn off Hardware Compatibility. If you don’t want to turn off Hardware Compatibility, most footpedals that connect to synthesizers or keyboard controllers output MIDI data over controller #4, which Helix can accept.
